Are Truck Bed Campers Waterproof in Heavy Rain? Dain's Real Storm Test

October 11, 2025. We were on my Father in Laws antelope hunt outside of Maybell, CO. We knew there was a storm coming but did not know how bad it would be. And we were staying in my 2022 Tacoma SR5 with a Lone Peak and a diesel heater.

The storm I got caught in

He found success at 5:15pm by the time we returned to camp it had started to sprinkle. From there it got progressively worse from a sprinkle to raining sideways with sustained winds around 35mph and gusts up to 65mph. The Lone Peak kept us warm and dry. We felt the truck swaying left and right all night but we were extremely comfortable and safe. When we woke up the next morning the truck had sunk into the dirt and buried our leveling blocks.

How the camper held up

The camper held up great for the entire 6+ hours of rain and wind. People in our group were in a popup and were concerned with blowing over. In the Lone Peak we felt swaying all night long but not enough to keep us from sleeping for short periods until the wind direction shifted. We were safe, comfortable, warm, and dry all night. Minus our clothes from getting in/out of the camper.

Condensation and Leaks

We struggle with condensation in the camper when it is really wet out or cold. To mitigate this we will run our diesel heater on low which has helped us immensely to stay dry. Bonus it helps dry out clothes, boots, or whatever else may be wet from outside.

Keeping dry: my tips

To stay warm and dry our biggest tip is to have a diesel heater. It allows us to warm up during cold winter trips and dry out wet clothing and gear. Regardless if we have it or not we always make sure we have a dry set of clothing and dry bedding as a just in case.
